Invitation to Youth Musicians

Do you play an instrument in the band or orchestra at school? Sing in the choir, or even just the shower at home? Take private music lessons?

TUMC offers a variety of opportunities for youth musicians to share their musical gifts in worship.

Here are some of the ways you can get involved:

  •  Play or sing a solo or small ensemble in a worship service anytime throughout the year
  • Play or sing a solo or small ensemble for special Youth Led Worship services two times a year, in February and August.
  • Join a music-leading team for a youth mission trip
  • Play in the youth band; participants can play year-round in the band, or if schedules do not allow that kind of time commitment, can join for the portions of the year and performances that work for their schedules

Youth band practice has begun and takes place on Sundays, 12-2pm, in the youth basement. ALL interested youth, 6th-12th grade, are welcomed and encouraged to bring their instruments and join us.

Meet Kati and Joey

Youth Music Directors

It all started when...

Kati and Joey started the youth band at TUMC at the end of 2011, with encouragement from David Chambers to get a few youth musicians together to “jam” and maybe get a song or two together for youth led worship in February 2012. Since then, the youth band has grown into a vibrant part of the youth program and contributes regularly to music in worship at TUMC.

Kati and Joey met in 1998 at Belmont University in Nashville, TN while both studying music and began dating in 1999.  In 2000, when Kati was an intern with the youth group at a UMC in Nashville as part of her minor in youth ministry, she and Joey had their first opportunity to create and lead a youth worship band together.  Making music and working with young people has been a significant aspect of their growing partnership. Kati and Joey were married in 2002 at TUMC and added twin boys to their family in 2013 named Jaxon and Elijah (Jax and Eli).  In their weekday lives, Joey is the IT director at NYOS, a thriving K-12 charter school in North Austin, and Kati works with young adults with autism spectrum disorder and other exceptionalities, overseeing the Career Development and Independent Living Skills programming at College Living Experience in North Austin.
